Smith + Wesson Model 1 ½. Deluxe panel scene engraved and inscribed "Wm. A. Applegate, of the U.S.S.S. Division" serial #26702. 32 Rimfi re caliber with all standard features other than engraving and nickel plating. Chief operative of the North East District, Wm. A. Applegate, was active during the era of U.S. Grant and involved in numerous operations involving currency con-men and schemes of every matter. His history needs to be further explained further researched beyond the 1 short chapter devoted to him in the accompanying book "Memoirs of the United States Secret Services" by G.P. Burnham. This is the only real and original inscribed 19th century American firearm known to this writer inscribed with U.S. Secret Service. The engraving is profuse and deluxe, with the inscription on the left and hunting dog pointing in a circular panel on the right. Approximately 30 - 50% old period nickel remains with considerable erosion and blackening from fi ring and heavy polishing. The cylinder is numbered 39 only and an old replacement.
