-SOLD-Flintlock Rifle used by Richard Dix
Authentic Kentucky Flintlock Rifle from Stembridge gun arsenal collection numbered S 510 on left breech end of barrel. Carried and used by Richard Dix in Republic Pictures golden age classic “Man of Conquest” and many other frontier classics from the 1930’s through 60’s. Several collectors and experts feel it was also used as a backup by John Wayne and Oliver Hearty in the Allegany Uprising but we have not been able to locate a clear enough screenshot to authenticate this as the action moves too fast or is grainy. In any case the rifle is well documented by photo throughout the film “Man of Conquest” portraying the life of Sam Houston Hero Texas in this 1939 epic. The rifle is circa 1820’s to 30’s (The Alamo). Marked on the barrel Melchior, Baltimore in two lines. The rifle is full stocked and measures 52 inches overall with 36 inch medium weight octagon barrel with approximately 36 caliber rifled barrel. Double set triggers. Lightly engraved brass mounts with round disc style patch box. Retains its original late flintlock lock with all correct parts except top jaw and screw old replacements. The stock shows loses of wood at the edges of the forend, some repairs and restoration probably by studio. The overall condition is good. Photo of Dixs with this rifle included. Was $6,200 now is $4,850. A must for a Texas collector.
