French Flintlock Dueling Pistols Signed “Dupre a Paris, Rue de Lechelle”
Pair of French flintlock dueling pistols signed “Dupre a Paris, Rue de Lechelle” on barrels and locks with JR and crown barrel makers cartouche at the breach. Contained in original French style fitted casing. The pair are reminiscent in style to Wogdon and British makers circa 1800 - 1815. The pistols show micro groove rifling favored by the best French makers in Napoleonic era. The pistols measure 14 ½ inches overall with 9 ¼ barrels. The pair are nicely stocked in figured walnut with crisp checkering on the back of the grips. The pair are in very good condition with traces of finish and crisp wood showing minor compression crack in forend. The actions work well and horn tipped correct style ramrods possibly the originals are retained. The case is lined in red felt with chamois leather died to match in the lid showing gold “bookbinder” style decoration. The bottom is piped in gold trim with Moroccan red leather tops to the compartments. A correct size mold / tool, flask, rod with mallet head is included. Missing a screwdriver (possibly grandson borrowed it to tone carburetor?). The compartments covers are retained with working key. Dupree was a medallion maker and die engraver for the French mint as well as gun maker to Napoleon and the French court.
