Engraved and Inscribed Henry Rifle
Engraved and inscribed Henry rifle #7365 illustrated page 34 “The book of Winchester engraving from the Raymond Bentley collection. Possibly the most well-known of this style “camp engraved rifles” inscribed “J Spangenberg, Co. B, 3rd Rgt U.S.V.V.”. The metal shows traces of silver gilt on the barrel and gold gilt on the frame. An article was recently written for American society of arms collectors journal that mentions Spangenberg's trade was that of an engraver (article not located currently).
The frame is crisp with mellow honey colored patina showing well executed engraving of American eagles, scrolls and neatly cut original inscription. Barrels show a brownish patina with traces of silver in the groove between barrel and magazine. The stock is very good plus to near fine. The markings are sharp and Henry is crisp and original as found. A long time favorite of mine for this type engraving.
