Colt 1849 Pocket Model with Original to the Period Inscription W. L. Gammage who served as Brigade surgeon for McNair’s Brigade, Fourth Arkansas Infantry Regiment Confederate States Army. Gammage authored The Camp, The Bivouac and the Battle Field which were taken from his journal and first published in 1864. The Fourth Arkansas were involved in many key battles mostly in the western theater including Pea Ridge with General Ben McCulloch and many others throughout the war. Dr. Washington Lafayette Gammage the owner of this pistol was a resident of Cherokee County, Texas from about 1850 - 1860. He was born in Alabama in 1827. On May 1st 1861, he joined Fancis M. Taylor’s company known as the Lone Star Defenders of Texas who reorganized under the Fourth Arkansas Regiment of the Confederacy. He performed his duties commendably and at the end of the war on his way home was killed in an accident at Mobile, Alabama.

Model 1849 Colt Pocket .31 Caliber Percussion, 4 inch barrel two line New York address, 5 shot, serial #107054. The pistol remains in good original condition showing a brown patina finish. The inscription on the butt is professionally engraved and absolutely guaranteed with a nice untouched patina overall.
Conclusion:
W. L. Gammage is recognized by Civil War historians for his accurate portrayal of events and battles involving the Fourth Arkansas Regiment of the Confederacy. The only pocket Colt we can recall being inscribed to a Confederate Surgeon. Priced reasonably at $8,950.
