“Best Quality” Double Rifle by Charles Lancaster of Bond Street London
“Best Quality” double rifle by Charles Lancaster of Bond Street London, circa 1870-1875, serial #4825. Featuring Lancaster's patent “oval bore” non-fowling rifling along with slide and tilt under lever action. The underlever rotates a cam which causes the barrel to slide smoothly and then tilt up. The rifle is very finely engraved in a tight scroll with select grain walnut stocks. The rifle measures 44 ½ inches overall with 28 inch barrels and 14 ½ inch pull. Chambered in 450-400 3 1/4 in black powder and contains within an oak case showing full Lancaster trade label.
The condition is very good plus so most original tobacco brown finishes on barrels with Damascus pattern. The frame and action are a silvery patina with traces of light case colors. The stocks are well pressured and show minor scratches and minor use with only normal aging. Actions tight and bright bores. Generally very good plus overall. An eight on a 1-10 grading scale The case also is good to very good overall with minor repair and re-fitting two barrels.
